Stevens Loses Senate Seat
Ted Stevens has lost the Senate seat that he held since 1968. Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage, has won the seat and will now become the junior Senator from Alaska. Last month, Stevens was convicted on seven counts of providing false testimony. His loss spares the Republicans the embarrassment of expelling him or asking him to resign. It also quashes any talk of Sarah Palin leaving the Governor's office to run for the Senate. The GOP cannot rebuild if it has convicted felon amongst its ranks. This defeat was for the best.
