Patriots Trade Cassel to the Chiefs

Well, New England isn't big enough for two quarterbacks.

The Patriots have traded Matt Cassel along with linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a second round draft pick.

I'm not surprised Cassel is no longer a Patriot. However, I thought the Detroit Lions would be interested in taking him on.

I think this a great move for the Chiefs. Now I don't know if the Chiefs will be playoff bound in 2009 but they will most certainly improve their 2-14 record from last season. Cassel has proven himself a serviceable NFL quarterback and in Vrabel they now have a Pro Bowl quality linebacker. All the Chiefs had to give up was a single draft pick and not even a first round one at that.

One cannot ignore Tom Brady's successes with the Patriots but he had two knee surgeries. This on top of his foot injury. Will Brady be the same player? Not to mention having just married supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Is he exactly focusing on rehab right now? But then again Brady has three Super Bowl rings and although the Pats were 11-5 with Cassel at the helm they did not make the post-season. If Cassel had won a Super Bowl ring it might be a different story but winning is everything. I guess the Pats are satisfied with Brady's progress. Fine. But if you are going to trade Cassel not to mention a high quality defensive player like Vrabel you would want more than a single draft pick. This trade might come back to bite the Pats if not this season certainly in years to come.

The Pats and Chiefs are not scheduled to meet in the upcoming NFL season but it would certainly be neat if they were to face off in the post-season. Now there would be some drama.
