Brad Penny has signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals worth $7.5 million. With incentives, Penny could make up to $9 million in 2010.
Penny split the 2009 season with the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants. His combined numbers were 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA. Penny was picked up by the Giants on August 31st after he was released by the Red Sox. He pitched much more effectively with the Giants winning four of his five decisions with an ERA of 2.59.
Look for Penny to replace Joel Pineiro as the Cards number three starter behind Cy Young candidates Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. If Carpenter can stay healthy that could be a very formidable starting three.
