Alyssa Stanton is believed to be the world's first Rabbi who is both a woman and African-American.
She was ordained today in Cincinnati and in August will become Rabbi at Congregation Bayt Shalom in Greenville, North Carolina.
The New York Times made this curious observation however:
Although the Reform and Conservative branches of Judaism began ordaining female rabbis in the 1970s and ’80s, many blacks and Jews still believed it was impossible to be both black and Jewish.
Really? Have they never heard of Sammy Davis, Jr?
