Noor Almaleki, 1989-2009. R.I.P.

Noor Almaleki, the young woman who was run over by her father in Arizona last month, for becoming "too Westernized", yesterday succumbed to her injuries. She was 20 years old.

Her father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, is expected to be charged with murder. Currently, he is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Almaleki also ran over her boyfriend's mother, Amal Edan Khalaf. It should also not be forgotten that instead of owning up to his crime he fled to Mexico and then flew to London possibly abetted by relatives. Fortunately, he was intercepted in London and flown back to this country to answer for his crimes.

This was an honor killing plain and simple. The Almaleki came to the United States from Iraq in the mid-1990s. Noor returned to Iraq to be wed in an arranged marriage. However, she would return to the United States to live with her boyfriend and his mother. For this, Almaleki deemed that his daughter brought his family dishonor and the only way to restore that honor was to kill her.

This is what happens in a religion that knows no concept of forgiveness.

Mark Steyn also raises an excellent point. If Noor Almaleki were gay and an Evangelical Christian and had been killed by her father this would be page one of The New York Times. Unfortunately, it barely merits a shrug. The New York Times would not dare to use the phrase "honor killing."

Well, the American justice system must tell Muslims that this country will not tolerate honor killing. The only appropriate punishment for Faleh Hassan Almaleki is for him to be sentenced to death.
