Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is linking efforts to rein in Iran with Israel going back to the negotiating table with the Palestinians.
Clinton told the House Appropriations Committee:
For Israel to get the kind of strong support it's looking for vis-a-vis Iran it can't stay on the sideline with respect to the Palestinian and the peace efforts, that they go hand-in-hand.
In other words, Israel is on its own with Iran unless they pony up to the Palestinians.
The Gulf States certainly have no love lost for Iran but they are only concerned about what Iran might do to Israel to the extent that it affects their territories.
If Iran were to drop a nuclear bomb in Israel there would be dancing in the streets throughout the Arab world including Egypt and Jordan which have diplomatic ties to Israel.
The only Palestinian state that is wanted by Palestinians is one that replaces Israel not one that lives side by side with it. New Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu knows this all too well and has little desire to establish yet another nation state in the Middle East hostile to Israel.
Netanyahu is due to visit Washington next month and will no doubt be put through the ringer by Obama and Clinton. But if any world leader can stand up to that dynamic duo it is Netanyahu.
