Fresh from convincing Turkey to drop its objections over new NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and en route for his first state visit to Turkey, President Obama called upon the European Union to admit Turkey into the European Union. Obama said, the EU should "anchor Turkey firmly in Europe."
President Obama was firmly rebuked by French President Nicolas Sarkozy who said, "I have been working with President Obama but when it comes to the EU it is up to member states of the EU to decaide." Sarkozy then reiterated his oppositon to Turkish membership in the EU.
At a time when Turkey is drifting away from secularism and growing closer to Iran and Syria this is not the time to include Turkey in the EU much less for President Obama to be publicly imploring the EU to do so.
I told you my praise for Obama wouldn't last. That took all of an hour.
