Former adult film actress Marilyn Chambers died yesterday. Chambers was found unconscious in her home by her teenaged daughter. She would have turned 57 on April 22nd.
The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
Before getting into adult films, Chambers landed small roles in mainstream movies and did commercial work most notably appearing on an Ivory Soap detergent box. When her adult film career took off in the early 1970s, Ivory Soap abruptly dropped her although she was long associated with the brand. She would retire from adult films to raise a family but would eventually return well into her 40s.
In more recent years, she had become politically active. Her political beliefs tended towards libertarianism as she stood as a vice-presidential candidate in both 2004 and 2008 for the Personal Choice Party and Boston Tea Party, respectively. Both entities were offshoots of the Libertarian Party.
