Earlier this evening there was a crash on Boston's MBTA. The collision took place on the Green Line as one subway car rear ended the other in the tunnel between Government Center and Park Street at about 7:18 p.m. I can tell you that is a very busy corridor and one could only imagine what might have happened had this happened during afternoon rush hour. The Green Line is especially busy during afternoon rush hour when there's a home game at Fenway Park as there was this evening.
Fortunately, no one was killed although nearly fifty people were injured and taken to nearby Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Medical Center and other area hospitals.
Amongst the injured was the driver who was writing a text message to his girlfriend at the time of the accident. I watched a live press conference on WCVB (the ABC affiliate in Boston) with MBTA General Manager Dan Grabauskas stating that he was having trouble trying "to contain my outrage."
Writing a text message while driving a car on the highway is bad enough. But writing a text message while driving a subway with the lives of scores of people in your hands is not only irresponsible but criminally negligent.
