Delara Darabi, 1986-2009. R.I.P.

Iran has executed a young woman named Delara Darabi. She was only 22 years old.

Darabi was convicted of murdering her father's cousin when she was 17. She reportedly "confessed" to the crime. Yet Roxana Saberi "confessed" to being a spy. As such I am disclined to believe what the Mullahs would have us believe.

Last month, Darabi was to be executed but the head of Iran's judiciary gave her a 60 day reprieve. But she was hanged this morning only 11 days after her execution was stayed.

Some reprieve.

I know Saberi has not been sentenced to death but we know what happens to people in Evin Prison. If the Iranians are prepared to execute Darabi after she was granted a measure of mercy then there must be great cause for concern for Saberi's life.

Under the circumstances does President Obama care to explain why he insists on engaging this regime?

What makes him think Iran wants hold hands with us when they hold their own people, especially their women, in such low regard?

This story is a shame but unfortunately nothing new for Iran or the greater Middle East. I just wrote an article about this recently:

Death sentences for juveniles, real estate brokers and pigs: just another week in the Middle East
