The Boston Bruins lost a heart breaker to end their best season in a decade.
They were bested by the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in OT of Game 7 of the NHL Eastern Conference Semi-Final. Scott Walker (not to be confused with the fellow who sang The Sun Doesn't Shine Anymore) scored the winning goal with just over a minute left in OT to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 victory.
Walker had previously earned the ire of Bruins fans when he sucker punched Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward in Game 5.
The Bruins, who were the number one seed in the Eastern Conference, were down three games to one but just came up short. It was the closest the Bruins had come to getting to the Stanley Cup in ten years. They were last in the Stanley Cup Final in the 1989-1990 season when they lost to the Edmonton Oilers in five games. The last time the Bruins won the Stanley Cup was the 1971-1972 season when Bobby Orr was in his heyday.
The Hurricanes will now meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final. I am rooting for the Penguins. I have nothing against the good people of North Carolina but how can you have a hockey team where it doesn't snow? It's just wrong. Wrong I tell you.
At least there are two "original six" teams in the Western Conference Final with the defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings taking on the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks have not won a Stanley Cup since the 1960-1961 season and were last in the Final in 1991-1992 when they were swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins then led by Mario Lemeiux.
So anybody but the Carolina Hurricanes.

O.K. So it snows once a year in Raleigh.
But how many kids in Raleigh play hockey in the middle of the street with but one snowfall a year?
A lot fewer than in the Pittsburgh, Chicago or Detroit areas. And certainly far fewer than in Canada.
