President Obama's dogmatism regarding the closure of Guantanamo Bay is quite unbecoming.
First, Obama argues the Bush Administration left a "mess" at Guantanamo. What mess? Just because Amnesty International compares Gitmo to the Soviet gulags doesn't make it a mess. Just because Gitmo offends the bleeding hearts doesn't make it a mess. Announcing that you are closing it without knowing where you are going to put the detainees is an invitation to chaos. That folks is a mess.
President Obama doesn't even have the common courtesy to visit Guantanamo to see things for himself. By not doing so he does our armed forces a grave disservice.
Second, Obama's criticism of Congress on this issue are simply daft. Obama accused Congress of "fear mongering" and their actions "were calculated to scare people rather than educate them."
So when Senator Daniel Inouye, who has served Obama's native Hawaii for 45 years, says, "Its up to the administration to fashion a plan that can win the support of the American people and members of Congress," it's fear mongering. Give me a break.
Third, Obama's naivete was on full display. Obama remarked, "It is the reason why enemy soldiers have surrendered to us in battle, knowing they'd receive better treatment from America's armed forces than from their own government."
Um, methinks there's a difference between war and terrorism. The last time I checked terrorism has no rules of engagement. The people we caught in Afghanistan weren't wearing any military uniforms.
Notwithstanding this the detainees at Gitmo got three square meals, five daily prayers and lots of soccer. Gitmo detainees are more pampered than our soldiers.
But then again what do you expect of a President who confuses his own Secretary of Defense with the founder of Microsoft?
Finally, Obama said, "Indeed, the existence of Guantanamo likely created more terrorists around the world than it ever detained."
Where do I begin? I think al Qaeda was doing just fine in recruiting terrorists long before Gitmo opened its doors. Besides it isn't a question of what makes Muslims angry it's what doesn't make Muslims angry. Obama is essentially excusing terrorism and that our alleged behavior somehow justifies it. Disgraceful.
Well, Obama is picking a fight not only with Congress but with us and our security. It is a fight that even with all his charm he cannot win and must not win.
